Last month, twelve lucky winners were treated to a VIP tour of Preston Market with Flavourhood Tours and local chef Matt Wilkinson. Flavourhood Tours run local foodie excursions around Melbourne’s inner north. Covering Bruswick street, Lygon street and more, there’s always something new to discover. Matt Wilkinson is chef and owner of Melbourne eatery Pope Joan in East Brunswick, Melbourne, which is sadly set to shut it doors later this month after becoming a neighbourhood favourite over the past eight years.
Preston Market is Matt’s local market, and a favourite spot for collecting the best local produce for all kinds of culinary creations. Local Pantry Co. was the first stop on the tour, where the group were introduced to some of Matt's favourites from Mount Zero and Melbourne Rooftop Honey. The group also stopped by to visit the organic poultry store and greengrocers at Preston Market, collecting fresh produce along the way. Insider tips and a good dose of humour were shared by Matt and tour guide Raffaela Ceddia.
Matt then treated guests to a live cooking demonstration of his Golden Chicken Soup using all of the ingredients they had collected along the way. It was perfect timing as the cold weather has hit in Melbourne and this soup makes for a wonderfully nutritious winter dinner. Shoppers at the Preston Market were then invited to try the soup for a gold coin donation which went to local food charity, SecondBite. If you missed it, the recipe can be found on the Preston Market website.
What a wonderful way to kick off your weekend in Melbourne's north! Flavourhood Tours will be visiting Preston Market again on June 30 - you can find out more by visiting them here.
