Here at Local Pantry Co. headquarters we are a little addicted to the Roasted Chickpeas by Pangkarra Foods. We thought it was time to get to know them a little better, so here is our little chat with Katherine Maitland from Pangkarra Foods.
HOW DID PANGKARRA FOODS COME TO BE?
Pangkarra Foods started in March 2011. My husband and I decided to value-add what we were growing on the farm and enter the food business. We still run the farm, but now we have 15 different food products from pasta and flour, to lavosh and pulses (chickpeas and faba beans).
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR PRODUCTS?
Our products are paddock to plate, completely traceable, natural, delicious and healthy.
WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT FOOD?
Food is not only about fuelling your body, it’s a social and ethical decision. What we put in our bodies affects our moods, appearance, and general wellbeing. Food is so important in all that we do.
WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL WEEKEND MENU?
I love starting the day with eggs, lunch can either be a chickpea salad or ciabatta toast and pasta dinner.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DISH TO COOK AT HOME?
I like to make Pangkarra Fettuccine with Beef Ragout.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY AT PANGKARRA LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
Every day is different, which is why I love working in a family owned and operated business. Depending on what’s happening on the farm (seeding or harvest season), we might have an office day, or be outdoors checking crops. We do everything from marketing, selling, orders, invoices, deliveries, new product development and more.
WHERE WOULD YOU TRAVEL ON YOUR IDEAL FOOD ADVENTURE?
Italy is an amazing food destination, but I also think we’re pretty lucky here in Australia!

WHAT IS NEXT FOR PANGKARRA FOODS?
We have some new products in the pipeline to be launched at the beginning of next year. We also want to concentrate on building our existing product range and ensuring a sustainable business.
